White Sands is a sea of gypsum dunes, some 50ft high, surrounded by mountains.  It’s a playground for hiking and sledding, but the real magic starts at sunset when the blue hour sets the stage for some spectacular scenery.  A short drive away, Carlsbad Caverns has been described as the Grand Canyon with a roof on top.  Let your imagination run wild.  If you only do one “cave park” exploration, make it here.  Guadalupe is an alpine hiker’s paradise—rivaling some of the best hiking parks in the country (and with no crowds).  Stretch your legs on trails through canyons and up summits for stellar views.

The nine-day New Mexico-West Texas itinerary is a perfect getaway during the cooler months.  You will start with an exploration of White Sands dramatic scenery with a barefoot hike through the dunes and then try some sledding.  Next, descend 750ft below ground to explore Carlsbad Cavern.  Stay to watch the bats take flight after sunset.  Then spend the rest of the week in the Guadalupe Mountains hiking through canyons, over boulder strewn river beds and up the highest peaks.

Travel tips include airport, lodging and camping information, as well as links to current conditions and travel alerts.  The “Short on Time?  Don’t Miss” section identifies three days that are highlights.  Trip extensions listed include several additional hiking options.

New:  Looking for a shorter introductory overview itinerary?  A new 3 day in-park itinerary is now also included in this Guide.
