The Black Hills and Badlands of the Dakotas are spectacular gems of the Midwest.  Theodore Roosevelt badlands are interspersed in rolling, open prairie, as herds of buffalo and wild horses wander through the scenery.  And you can’t forget the ever-entertaining prairie dog “towns.”  Custer State Park, with its spectacular scenic drives through mountains and spires of granite, buffalo and “begging burros, is on everyone’s list of “state parks that should be national parks.”  In Badlands, mind blowing walls and formations jut out of the prairie to create a climbing playground for your inner child.

The nine day Dakotas itinerary has several scenic drives in each park, including some wildlife drives.  Your trip includes the most memorable hikes through badlands, mountains and panoramic overlooks.  You’ll also spend days kayaking on peaceful mountain lakes, and a day exploring Wind Caves famed boxwork formations.

Travel tips include airport, lodging and camping information, as well as links to current conditions and travel alerts.  The “Short on Time?  Don’t Miss” section identifies four days that are highlights.  Trip extensions listed include additional hiking options in each park.

New:  Looking for a shorter introductory overview itinerary?  A new South Dakota Only 3 day in-park itinerary is now also included in this Guide.  (Due to the remote location of Theodore Roosevelt, it is not feasible to see all four parks in 3 days.)
