The high peaks of the Chisos Mountains burst out of the desert plain.  The Rio Grande wanders aimlessly, carving deep canyons in the plateau.  Sotol, Prickly Pear and Ocotillo are alive with bird songs.  But wait until evening for the true crown jewel of Big Bend—the sky.  Nothing beats the rich bright colors of a desert sunset.  And the stars.  The Milky Way dances across this remote dark sky park.  You’ll feel small in this vast wilderness, and it’s fantastic.

The nine-day Big Bend itinerary includes the most memorable hikes up the panoramic vistas of the mountains, through the impossible rock formations of the desert, and along the wildlife laden canyons of the Rio Grande.  A scenic drive identifies the best view points.  And you’ll spend a day boating on the Rio Grande.

Travel tips include airport, lodging and camping information, as well as links to current conditions and travel alerts.  The “Short on Time?  Don’t Miss” section identifies three days that are highlights.  Trip extensions listed include several additional hiking options, information on multi-day rafting trips, and add-ons in neighboring Big Bend Ranch State Park.

New:  Looking for a shorter introductory overview itinerary?  A new 3 day in-park itinerary is now also included in this Guide.
